Ever seen those single girls in the supermarket? They have their hair in one of those sloppy, poofy, buns. They carry the little baskets filled with Lean Cuisine, Herbal Essence and the collector’s edition of When Harry Met Sally. They go home maybe to a roomate, maybe to a presumably arrogant feline – but most definitely, alone.

Is she happy, or is she just biding her time until her next relationship?

Recently beach reading on spring break, in between chapters of The New Rules of Marketing and PR, I grabbed the latest issue of Cosmopolitan. I was annoyed with the Single Girls Bible article, which basically contained a list of things to do while you’re in between relationships. What is this, 1940? Why do you have to be in between relationships? Why can’t you just…be?

I don’t see guys flipping through the pages of FHM searching for a single boy to-do list. Why? Because they have better things to do. Like doing, for instance, whatever the heck they feel like doing because they’re single so they’re going to have fun because you’re only young once and you have to make the most of your freedom while it lasts. Sounds like a plan to me. Maybe guys know something we don’t.

Look. I don’t know anything about anything when it comes to dating. But if I did, and I had a little sister to share advice with, I would share:

-My car analogy

In middle or high school, some people find their shiny dream car and buy it right off the lot and never look back. That’s great for them. However, the vast majority of us have to test drive a few cars before we buy one. Somewhere along the line, you might find a pretty awesome Jetta and drive that for a while. But then that Jetta has mom issues and he’s kind of crazy and turns out to be a huge jerk and you finally have to decide to return it and just ride around on your little pink bicycle for while. And sure, you’ll miss that car sometimes. But you know that you have trails to ride, mountains to climb, and lots of other bike riders to meet. Afterall, you’re on one hot piece of transportation and you don’t need another set of tires to make you whole. Then, when you are completely happy and fulfilled just riding your bike, the right car will drive itself off the lot and come find you.

-The importance of guy friends

I think the TV show Sex and the City reinforces the idea that all you need to make it through the single life is your girlfriends. I beg to differ. My girlfriends are the ones that I talk to. They get the details and the tears. But guys offer a great, different perspective you just can’t get from girls. Specifically, you need to befriend a player and a nice guy. Have the player tell you stories about all the things he and his player friends do in their pursuit of girls. It’ll make you realize what you aren’t missing out on. (Plus, a player can’t fool a player. He’ll tell you who to watch out for.) And the nice guy? Well, if he’s a really nice guy, he won’t have to tell you stories. His actions will speak louder than his words. I can tell how much my nice guy friend loves his girlfriend by the way he cares. It makes me realize that the nice ones are out there. And even in the most self-loathing, pessimistic, lonely moments when you feel like finding that nice guy is like looking for a needle in a haystack—your nice guy friend reminds you of the potential, the possibility of something that is so worthwhile.

So that’s the single girl’s gospel from the Book of Janet.
